The amount of this charge usually ranges from $20-$40 and this small fee allows NorthStar to literally give away its nsf check collection service to businesses.
There are no sign up costs, no minimum number of checks, no termination costs, and no long term contracts. The sign up process is also fast, easy and secure (it takes about 3 minutes at this link).
Stop payment and closed account check collection:
Stop payment and closed account check collection is also available (this
is called "phase 2" and it is where intensive collection tactics are
used). A business may choose to let NorthStar use this service
when necessary or the business may choose to regulate which checks are
processed under this secondary selection service. With all phase 2
collections businesses receive back on these checks NorthStar will
return 50% of everything that is
collected--i.e., the full collected face value of the check plus 50% of any
fees).
Accounts receivables collection:
Accounts receivables collection is also available in the form of
inexpensive collection letters or a simple 65/35 split on debt less than
120 days old (debt older than this is treated as a 50/50 split).
If debt submitted to the 65/35 or 50/50 split service cannot be
collected, businesses pay no fees for the collection
